The mystery object has no explanation

Elena Carmen

Carmen showed up at eleven with the energy of someone who had just meal-prepped for a week and was ready to fix everyone’s life. ‘We’re doing the cabinet audit,’ she announced, before I had finished my coffee. I made a sound that was not yes but also was not strong enough to be no, and that was how we ended up sitting on my living room floor surrounded by everything that has been quietly living in my lower kitchen cabinets since approximately 2022.

We found two extra phone chargers for phones neither of us currently own. A ramekin with no visible purpose. A silicone thing — we genuinely do not know. Carmen held it up, turned it three different ways, Google Lens gave us three different answers, and we decided to leave the question open for future generations. We also found the specific whisk I have been buying replacements for because I thought I lost it. It was there the whole time. Three feet from the stove. Thriving.

The bag had depths we were not prepared for.

The archive project has me in this headspace lately where I want everything organized and documented and knowable. Margaret has basically rewired how I think about physical objects — what holds historical weight, what’s just clutter pretending to matter. I applied zero of that wisdom today. We made a keep pile, a donate pile, and a third pile Carmen labeled ‘crimes against storage.’ The mystery object is in the third pile. We’re both pretending it doesn’t exist. The cabinet is technically worse now but at least we know what we’re dealing with, which is honestly the most you can ask for on a Wednesday.
